Here are our FFF"s (Fun Ferret Facts!) from general information to bizarre "did you knows" this page has all you need to know about your Mustela putorius furo ! (The scientific name for Ferrets) and provides more ways to take care of them.
Ferrets make wonderful pets. They’re friendly, playful, and their antics
will make you laugh. They’re also one of the hardest pets to own because
of the amount of cleaning and expense involved. The average life span is six
to seven years in the U.S.
A ferret has the brain capacity of a two-year-old child. It must get a
lot of playtime and stimulation, mental and physical. If it’s kept in a
cage, it should be allowed out of the cage for a minimum of 4-5 HOURS EVERY
DAY (more for a younger ferret). It must be allowed out at least twice
a day. This is not an option. Ferrets do not play in the cage, so they
must have time out of it. Some ferrets have their own room to play in
and aren’t confined to a cage, which is great. They must still be
allowed out of the room. A room becomes nothing more than a giant cage
to them. Why have a pet if it’s going to be confined most of the time?
Ferrets can be litterbox/newspaper trained to about 80%, sometimes
more. You've got to figure out at least 20% of the time they are going to
use the floor somewhere. You have to love ferrets enough to be willing
to deal with that. If you’re expecting the ferret to run to a room
where there's a litter box or newspaper, it seldom happens. This is a downside to having them. Some ferrets will not use a litter box or
newspaper if it has been used more than a couple of times. So, the
litter box must be kept scooped and the newspaper changed.
Ferrets are natural hunters and can easily kill birds and other small
animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice,
sugar gliders, and chinchillas. It is their instinct to do everything
in their power to get to these animals to kill them.
Ferrets have a very fast metabolism with a high energy level. They need
to be able to run & play to burn off energy. A young ferret needs about
SIX to EIGHT hours of run and play time and be out at least twice a
day. As they get older four to five hours of running and play time is good.
They need a very high protein /high-fat food. A protein
level as close to 50% is best with meat being the main source of
protein. Of course, the better the food, the more expensive it is.
Ferrets do not tolerate heat because they cannot sweat. They can have
heat stroke. Heat causes a lot of stress, which can bring on ulcers or
irritable bowel disorders. The temperature should be 78 or below.
Veterinarians suggest temps from 68 to 76 degrees.
Ferrets are very smart and very fast. A Ferret can travel at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour! If they can find a way to get out
of the house, they will. Doors not shut all the way are the main way
they get out. Every hole an inch or larger has to be covered or
blocked or the ferret can squeeze through. Anything that can be
scratched through must be blocked, especially dryer hoses and screens.
